A Report on Four Days workshop on IBM – Rational Application Developer
S V Institute of Computer Studies, CSI Student Branch – Kadi organized Four day workshop on IBM Rational Application Developer (RAD). The aim of the workshop is to improve programming with new GUI tools and introduce new IDE of IBM to the students for their future reference.
The workshop scheduled on 27th to 30th April 2010. It covers brief introduction of IBM Rational Application Developer. The workshop was engraved by Mr. Sulemaan Saudagar, Technical Expert from IBM India Pvt. Ltd., Pune. It was divided in three parts: tutorial, technical session and session tests.
In the inaugural function Dr. Nilesh Modi, Head of the Department quoted the importance of the Rational Application Developer with some of the open source technologies like JAVA. The coordinator of the program Shri Nisarg Pathak, appreciated the students enthusiasm for attending the program.
Total 60 students and faculties attended the program. All the students were actively participated in all the session and shown their eagerness through test results. Beside introduction of IBM RAD students also take delight of Java Programming with GUI.

A Report on Three Days’ Workshop on LAMP Technologies
S V Institute of Computer Studies, CSI Student Branch – Kadi organized three full days Hands on workshop on LAMP Technologies. This workshop executed on 13th, 14th & 15th April, 2010 by technical expert Mr. Hardik Bhavshar, Project Manager, Sincordia Technologies, Ahmedabad. The Aim of this workshop was to provide the guidelines to students who have little bit idea about Open Source Technologies.
Total 120 students took part in this event. The major topics covered by Mr. Hardik was Introduction of Linux, Apache, PHP and MySql, WAMP configuration, Programming with PHP, PHP-Mysql connectivity, web development with PHP, working with content management system- Jhoomla. This workshop was warmly welcome by students.
This function was inaugurated by Dr. Nilesh Modi (Head of the Department) S.V. Institute of Computer Studies. Mr. Nisarg Pathak (Asst. Professor) has encouraged students to remain interactive in entire technical session to take most benefits of the workshop and technical expert.
The workshop concluded by Miss. Neha Mistry with word of thanks and presented a memento to Mr. Hardik Bhavshar. The program was coordinated by Mr. Vipul Joshi, Student Branch Coordinator, SVICS-CSI, Kadi.

A Report on State Level Best Project Competition for Under Graduate Students of Computer Science
CSI Ahmedabad Chapter in association with GLS CSI Student Branch has organized a state level best project competition for Under Graduate Students of Computer Science colleges on 6th May, 2010, Thursday. The motto behind the event was to motivate undergraduate students to demonstrate their skills they have developed during the industrial training they have undergone as a part of their final year curriculum.
The function was inaugurated by Shri R. P. Soni, Campus Director (Computer Education) of GLS. Shri Pradip Jain, Chairman, CSI AC welcomed the participants. Shri Bharat Patel, Immediate Past chairman briefed about the CSI Events to encourage students to bring their best. He also emphasized on the benefits one gets from becoming CSI members. Mrs. Trupti Dodia, Project Co-convener gave the project outline. Mr. Viral Nagori, Project Convener proposed vote of thanks.
Other dignitaries Dr. Nilesh K Modi, Hon. Secretary, CSIAC, Dr. Bhusan Trivedi, Ex. Chairman, CSIAC and Direcor, GLSICT, Prof. Harsal Arolkar, Ex. Hon. Secreary, CSIAC, Mr. Milind Diwanji, Member, Managing Committee, CSIAC were present and graced the occasion
Dr. S.M. Shah, Regional Student Coordinator, Region-III, CSI and Director, S V Institute of Computer Studies, Kadi, Mr. Samir patel, Associate Professor, Nirma Universtiy, Mr. Nikhil Patel, MD, Complitech, and Ms. Sonal Jain, Asst Professor from GLSICT were invited as judges.
Total 11 teams from different colleges across the state participated in the competition. Each team is given 15 minutes to present the project they have developed during their final year curriculum. The presentation was followed by question answer round from Judges. The lunch was provided to all the participants during break. At the end of the competition, Dr. S M Shah presented his view on the entire competition and commented on the projects contested for the competition. According to his views, all the judges were very satisfied with the quality of the projects made at undergraduate level. They also commented that unless they were informed, it was very difficult to distinguish the project presented from the project carried out as part of post graduate curriculum. At the end, Dr. Shah announced the winners. Total 3 prizes were awarded and rests of all the participants were given the certificate for participation. The winners of the competition were Pooja and Neha from GLSICA. While Reshma and Divya from DDIT were awarded the 2nd prize, and Krunal and Niraj from NGCCA were awarded the 3rd prize. The prizes were sponsored by Pan Infotech, Ahmedabad.

A Report on State Level MCA Best Project Competition-2010
The State Level MCA Best Project Competition-2010 was organized by Computer Society of India–Ahmedabad Chapter in association with AESICS-CSI Student Branch on 10th May, 2010. The competition provided a platform for final year MCA students of different colleges in Gujarat to showcase their projects to experts from academia/industry, getting valuable suggestions from judges and knowledge sharing with students of other colleges. The competition was coordinated by Mr. Aditya Patel, Asst. Professor, AESICS and AESICS-CSI Student Branch Counsellor and Mr. Vinay Vachharajani, MC-Member, CSI-Ahmedabad Chapter.
The distinguished judges for the competition were Prof. R. P. Soni, Campus Director, GLS Institute of Computer Technology, Ahmedabad, Dr. S. M. Shah, Director, S V Institute of Computer Studies, Kadi and Prof. H. K. Desai, Head of the Department, MCA, Indus Institute of Technology and Engineering, Ahmedabad. The inaugural function of the competition was presided by Mr. Bipin V. Mehta, Fellow, CSI and Director, AES Institute of Computer Studies, Mr. Pradip N. Jain, Chairman, CSI Ahmedabad Chapter and Mr Bharat Patel, Immediate Past Chairman, CSI Ahmedabad Chapter. In the augural function, Mr. Pradip N. Jain, Chairman, CSI Ahmedabad Chapter addressed the students and encouraged the students for presenting their projects confidently to the judges. In the project presentation session, project teams of different colleges presented their projects to the distinguished judges. Each project presentation was followed by question and answering session and the judges provided valuable suggestions and comments for each project.
The projects were evaluated by panel of judges on the basis of project theme, system analysis, design, development, testing, project documentation as well as presentation of the project. In the valedictory function, the best project–first prize was awarded to project titled “Transpo – A Mass Transit Information System Portal” by Mr. Paresh Mayani, student of AES Institute of Computer Studies. Best project-second prize was awarded jointly to project titled “Product Information and Order Tracking System” by Ms. Vigna Shah, student of AES Institute of Computer Studies along with project titled “Job Portal” by Mr. Bhavesh Verma and Ms. Priyanka Patel, students of GLS Institute of Computer Technology. All the participants in the competition were given participation certificates. Total 18 students (10 projects) from various colleges affiliated to Gujarat University, Ganpat University and North Gujarat University participated in the competition. Vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Bipin V. Mehta, Director, AES Institute of Computer Studies.

Two days workshop on HTML and DHTML
A two days workshop on HTML and DHTML was organized by AESICS-CSI Student Branch during 12-13 May, 2010. The objective of the workshop was to give a good start to the students of MCA/BCA to learn web technology and to prepare them for projects using Java, .NET and PHP. The workshop received overwhelming response and interest from the students.
Prof. Sandeep Vasant covered the details of web server, web pages, publishing website and the basics of HTML along with the related practical. Prof. Aniruddhsinh Parmar covered basics of DHTML, cascading style sheets with variations along with technical session. Mr. Darshan Kansara, MCA student, showed great enthusiasm and gave a presentation on DHTML.
The technical sessions were followed by interesting question-answer and query solving of the students. The workshop was coordinated by Prof. Sandeep Vasant, AESICS.

CSI Student Branch at AESICS was inaugurated on 13 March, 2004. It has more than 140 student members, 9 Institutional members and 20 faculty members. Mr. Bipin V. Mehta, Director, AESICS is the Hon. Secretary, CSI for the year 2009-10. Mr Aditya B. Patel, Asst. Prof, AESICS is the CSI Student Branch Counselor, Mr. K K Patel, Asst. Prof, AESICS is the Hon. Treasurer, CSI-Ahmedabad Chapter and Mr. Vinay Vachharajani, lecturer, AESICS is the MC-member, CSI-Ahmedabd Chapter. AESICS-CSI Student Branch received the Best Regional Student Branch Award in Region–III (Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh) for 2004-05, 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09.

Summary of Activities organized during the year 2009-10
1. Seminar Activity for Communication and Soft Skill Development
The Seminar series activity was organized by AESICS-CSI Student branch during Feb-April, 2009. The objective of the activity was to develop communication, presentation and soft-skills among the students. The activity was coordinated by Mr. Pratik Thanawala, lecturer, AESICS and Ms. Meera Mehta, lecturer, AESICS. Students were motivated by the activity and many students prepared and presented their seminar on various emerging trends in IT such as Blue Ray Dics, Direct X, Image Morphing, Unified Threat Management, E-Chaupals, MARS among others. The Seminars presented included the practical and theoretical aspects of the topic along with real-life interesting examples. The seminars were followed by interesting question and answering session.
2. Short Term Training Program on “Special Interest Group-JAVA”
A short term training program on Java was organized by AESICS-CSI Student branch for MCA students during the month of March-April, 2009. The event was coordinated and conducted by Mr. Aditya Patel, Asst. Professor, AESICS. The objective of the training program was to strengthen the object oriented concepts and programming skills and to provide a sound knowledge of Java platform and prepare the students for advanced Java course covering J2EE technologies. The training program consisted of regular weekly theory sessions following by practical sessions in the Java lab. Fifty students of MCA participated in the program and were awarded certificates at the end of the program.
3. Short Term Training Program on .NET
A short term training program on .NET platform was organized by AESICS-CSI Student branch for MCA students during the month of April-May, 2009. The event was coordinated and conducted by Mr. K K Patel, Asst. Professor, AESICS. The objective of the training program was to impart industry oriented training on .NET platform and learn developing web based applications using ASP.NET language. The training program consisted of regular weekly theory sessions following by practical sessions in the .NET lab. Fifty students of MCA participated in the program and were awarded certificates at the end of the program.
4. Career Development Seminar on IBM Technologies
The Seminar was organized by AESICS-CSI Student Branch on 22 August, 2009 for final year MCA students. Mr. Aditya Patel, AESICS-CSI Student Branch Counselor welcomed the participants and gave overview of the seminar. The objective of the seminar was to make the students familiar with the different IBM tools and technologies available for software project development and their demand in the IT industry. Mr. Aditya Patel covered IBM Rational Rose as a tool for object oriented analysis and design using UML, forward engineering, Software testing using IBM Rational Robot, IBM WAS (IBM Websphere Application Server) and IBM DB2 Database server. He motivated the students to take part in TGMC 2009 by highlighting various benefits including real-life project scenarios, analysis and design documentation, free tutorial and CD resources and IBM certification available to the students. The seminar was followed by interesting question and answering session. More than 50 students benefited from the event.
5. Expert lecture on “Career prospects in ICT and J2EE v/s .NET Technologies”
The expert lecture was organized by AESICS-CSI Student Branch on 03 September, 2009 for final year MCA and BCA students. The objective of the expert lecture was to expose the students to the various career opportunities and job profiles available in the global IT industry and the demand of the leading technologies J2EE and .NET with their comparative roles and advantages. Mr. Paresh Bhavsar, Sandvine Inc., Candada started his session by explaining the various specialization fields available for professional IT career like Network Programming, Mobile applications, embedded technologies, ERP, Graphics and Multimedia. He also motivated the students to develop technical writing, documentation and communication skills and he urged the students be a team player rather than an individualistic approach to be acceptable to the industry. In the second session on technologies, Mr. Bhavsar elaborated on the technical architecture of J2EE and .NET and the architecture used for N-tier distributed applications. He also clarified the pros and cons of both the technologies and the suitability and role of each technology. More than 120 students benefited from the event.
6. Seminar on “Wireless internet and CDMA technology”
The seminar was organized by AESICS-CSI Student Branch on 19 September, 2009 for first year MCA students. The objective of the seminar was to expose the students to the basic concepts and terms of computer and internet technology. Mr. Sachin Simpi, Senior Manager, Tata Teleserivces Limited started the seminar by explaining the internet, WWW, wireless internet, USB and plug and play devices. He covered following topics in his technical session: broad band according to TRAI, wireless broadband, plug and play, wireless device configuration, memory slots in device, data-card.
7. Training Program on IBM Rational Rose
A training program on IBM Rational Suite for UML modeling for MCA final year students was organized by AESICS-CSI Student Branch during Sep-Nov 2009. The program was coordinated and conducted by Mr. Aditya Patel, Asst. Professor, AESICS. The objective of the program was to provide exposure to the students with IBM technology and using the IBM Rational tools in Object-oriented Analysis and Design using UML. The program consisted of regular weekly theory sessions following by hands-on practical training on IBM Rational Rose, Rational Robot and related CASE tools. The participants were given case studies as practical coursework to be submitted to the faculty for successful completion of the program. Fifty final year MCA students were awarded certificates on successful completion of the program.
8. Guest lecture on Software Project Development for Career Enhancement

A guest lecture was organized by AESICS-CSI Student Branch on 06 November, 2009 for final year MCA. Mr. Bipin Mehta, Director, AESICS and Hon. Secretary, CSI welcomed the guests and provided introduction of the guest lecture and importance of final year project development in the MCA program. The objective of the guest lecture was provide guidance to the students about how to develop industry acceptable, CMMI and IEEE standards based software projects using systematic methodologies, documentation and tools.
9. Workshop on System Software

Two days workshop on System Software was organized by AESICS-CSI Student Branch during 14-15 November, 2009. The objective of the workshop was to provide in-depth conceptual and practical exposure to system software like compilers, interpreters, macro processors and assemblers. Mr. Aditya Patel, Asst. Professor and AESICS-CSI Student Branch Counselor welcomed the participants and gave introduction of the resource persons, Dr. Jyoti Pareek, Dept. of Computer Science, Gujarat University and Prof. Samir Patel, Nirmal University. Mr. Bipin Mehta, Director, AESICS and Hon. Secretary, CSI gave introduction of CSI to new members, benefits of CSI membership in professional career development and various events organized by CSI. The workshop received overwhelming response in terms of 80 registrations from the student, faculty and CSI members of various colleges/Institutes across Gujarat and 55 new CSI student members were enrolled along with the workshop. All the participants were given the registration kit along with workshop CD. Vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Vinay Vachharajani, lecturer, AESICS and MC-member, CSI-Ahmedabad Chapter.
