2. Chapter Visits and Interactions: The Office Bearers and Regional Vice Presidents have succeeded in the revival of some of the Chapters, improving the functioning of some of the Chapters and exploring formation of new chapters. Apart from the above, the President and/or OBs visited and interacted with Chapter OBs/Members at-Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Bhopal and Ahmedabad.
3. Divisional and SIG Activities: As per the CSI Constitution and Byelaws, the technical areas and topics of special interests have been grouped into Five Divisions. A Division may have as many Special Interest Groups (SIGs) as decided by the ExecCom to cater to the emerging technological needs and to develop new technical competence among CSI members and the society at large. Essentially, an SIG is a sub-unit of a CSI division formed by members with the desire to pursue significant long term activity in an emerging area or a specialization meeting CSI objectives and national priorities. It is highly desirable that the CSI Divisions and SIGs draw strength from and associate with the programmes/activities of IFIP, IEEE, SEARCC and other national/international organizations. Further details and guidance can be obtained by writing to vp@csi-india.org
4. CSI-DOEACC MoU: Continuing Education and Professional Development Programmes: Owing to the brisk rise of India in the global scenario especially in IT domain, the lack of quality manpower is an acute problem that is faced by the industry. With an objective to address the dearth of quality manpower and to provide continuing education opportunities, the Govt. of India established DOEACC Society in the 1990. The CSI,a significant contributor in the above initiative, strengthened its relationship with the DOEACC which was formalized by signing of a MoU between two societies on 29th July 2010 by CSI President Prof. P. Thrimurthy and Dr. Birendra Singh, Executive Director, DOEACC Society. CSI had recently signed MoUs with C-DAC and PMI on 26th June 2010 during its National ExecCom meeting at Trivandrum. In addition to the above, this MoU with DOEACC will further strengthen the CSI Education Directorate, located in Chennai, to offer education programmes across India. For further details can be obtained by writing to director.edu@csi-india.org 5. Research and Publications Activities: The CSI has been providing minor research grants to faculty/students for several years through its Education Directorate. In order to strengthen the research activities and providing much need mentoring and guidance, the President has nominated some of CSI past presidents, Fellows and eminent researchers as Honorary Research Directors at different locations. A few more such nominations are in pipeline. The proposals to establishment of Research Centers at leading institutes/universities have also been invited. 6. Inter-Society and International Collaboration: It is a matter of pride that CSI’s collaboration/interaction with international/national professional organizations such as IFIP, SEARCC, IEEE, BCS, PMI, ECI, IE(I), IETE) has reached a new zenith. A few more such initiatives are in pipeline. The Chapters, Student Branches and members at large are requested to take this collaboration/interaction forwards fruition of the objectives through joint programmes and activities at various levels and locations. Any assistance for reaching out to these organizations can be obtained by writing to secretary@csi-india.org
7. CSI-eWIT Collaboration Soon: The UN and its member nations across the Globe are taking several path-breaking initiatives to empower Women in every sphere. The CSI joins the league of a few rare professional societies such as IEEE and ACM which have strong affinity groups (IEEE Women in Engineering, ACM Women in Computing) to address the challenges faced by Women workforce. CSI is planning a two pronged strategy to ensure an early fruition of its efforts. One is to associate with the eWIT, which has been working towards empowering women. The other is to constitute its own affinity group, CSI-W to inviting wider participation from its members and the society at large. The CSI-W will eventually will be interacting with Empowering Women in IT [eWIT] to offer programmes and services through CSI Chapters, Student Branches and member institutions across India. For further details can be obtained by writing to director.edu@csi-india.org
8. School Student Outreach Programmes: The CSI has created a niche for itself among the engineering college students by providing professional development opportunities to students through its 400+ student branches in India. The CSI, a founding member of SEARCC, has also been reaching out to the School students in the South-East Asian region through the SEARCC International School Software Competitions. Further details can be obtained by writing to director.edu@csi-india.org. A few of CSI leading chapters such as Coimbatore Chapter have taken path-breaking initiatives to reach to the class-12 school students by offering career counseling. In order to reach out to a larger section of students, a CSI National ICT Quiz programme is being proposed. The primary aim is to identify and recognize early starters towards the information and communication technologies related education and career opportunities in India.
9. Industry - Institute Interaction: Better interaction between Technical institutions and industry is the need of the hour. This will have great bearing on the academic curricula/syllabi, exposure of industrial atmosphere to students and subsequent placement of new college graduates in industries across the country. With the advent of globalization and opening up of Indian economy to outside world, the competition among industries has become stiff. To solve their engineering and computational problems they look up now to education and research institutes. Similarly, there is an urgent need to prepare graduating students and entry-level professionals for jobs in multinational companies, by exposing them to newer technologies and methodologies. These objectives can only be achieved well by bridging the gap between industry and academic. The President has requested our Past President Mr. Hemant Sonawala to lead our efforts in this direction. He will be assisted by Mr. Srikant R. Karode, the National Student Coordinator.
