CSI CIO Club Meet On Innovation Via Collaboration and Web 2.0

Many recent studies highlight the need to rethink the way we manage innovation. Traditional approaches, based on the assumption that the creation and pursuit of new ideas is best accomplished by a centralized and collocated R&D team, are rapidly becoming outdated. Instead, innovations are increasingly brought to the market by networks of firms, selected for their unique capabilities, and operating in a coordinated manner. This new model demands that firms develop different skills, in particular, the ability to collaborate with partners to achieve superior innovation performance.

Successful firms developed an explicit strategy for collaboration and made organizational changes to aid performance in these efforts. Ultimately, these actions allowed them to identify and exploit new business opportunities. In sum, collaboration is becoming a new and important source of competitive advantage.

Industry observers say these popular Web 2.0 technologies are an effective way to collaborate at work; they are simple and easy to use, making them very appealing to end users. In contrast to the first generation of Web offerings, Web 2.0 applications are more interactive, giving people an experience more akin to a native desktop application as opposed to a static Web page.

Looking at the enormous opportunity of Web 2.0 in helping innovation via collaborative methods, the Chapter along with IBM organized a conference on “Innovation via Collaboration and Web 2.0” on 28th August at Hotel Grand Hyatt in Mumbai. The Program was attended by about 100 IT heads/CIOs

The Key Note address was given by Somenath Ghosh, Chairman and Managing Director of National Research Development Corporation. He shared his inputs on the changes that innovation and invention have undergone from structured work in big laboratories to a collaborative environment of small firms and even individuals. He gave plenty of examples of very small countries which were doing extremely well in the area of technology Innovation. He emphasized the importance of sharing ideas in the knowledge economy, since ideas are going to be real wealth of individuals and the nation.

Chetan Yardi of IBM provided insights into how the collaborative work culture is becoming increasingly effective with advent of Web 2.0 environment. Multiple teams at multiple locations are able work on single platform and obtain solutions to complex problems thanks to the Web 2.0 environment. He also highlighted the paradigm shift in the behavioral and learning attitudes of the youth of today and the impact this is having on work culture in organizations.

The various issues related to application of Web 2.0 to business were discussed by some eminent CIOs, including Albert Lewis of Tata Interactive Services, Mahesh Patil of Reliance ADA group, Chetan Yardi and Gopi Krishnan of IBM and Prof Pradeep Pendse of Welingkar Management School, the panel discussion was moderated by Kaushal Sarda, co-founder and CEO of Uhuroo.
