Education Directorate is located at CSI National Headquarters, Tharamani, Chennai and is engaged in all education related activities.

1. Services Rendered :

The following services are provided by the Education Directorate to all members.
   Professional Certifications to Individual members and common public.
   Contemporary technology, domain, productivity improvement training programmes to members and the public.
   Fostering focused research by the academic community through sponsorship.
   Reaching IT to the masses and the under privileged by way of conducting certification exams to facilitate their absorption by industry.
   Nurturing the IT skills of budding IT professionals by sponsoring them for International Software competitions.
   Reaching the benefits of CSI affiliations with other professional bodies to all its members.
   Membership services for academic institutions and students including student chapters.
   Grant of accreditation to professional programmes after careful evaluation for value delivery and credibility.
   Collaboration with vendors, training and certification agencies to reach technology and skill updates and certifications to CSI members.

2. Certification examinations :

When CSI was founded in 1965, Information Technology was in a nascent stage globally, more so in India. To ensure supply of quality professionals to the budding IT industry, CSI took the initiative of being a neutral professional body that would vouch for skills possessed by professionals. This was done by administration of examination based certifications. Around 25,000 professionals earned certifications in various areas like software testing, software engineering, programming languages, database management systems and networking. Industry accorded ready recognition for CSI certifications by virtue of the professional capability evidenced in the certified professionals. CSI also conducted DOEACC ‘O' and ‘A' level examinations for aspiring professionals. 60,000 individuals benefited by gaining industry recognized certification through these examinations.

3. IT for the common man and the under privileged :

CSI has been actively involved in conducting and certifying employees of Electricity Board in IT skills. CSI has devised special IT proficiency examination for the visually challenged students of Victoria Memorial School for the Blind, Mumbai.

4. Training and certification in futuristic areas :

The Education Directorate is designing and launching programmes in the following areas :
  • Open Systems

  • Wireless technologies
  • Cyber Security

  • Remote infrastructure Management
  • Bio-informatics
  • Green IT
  • Logistics and SCM
  • Nanotechnology
  • Analytics and Business intelligence

Collaboration with different agencies and grant of accreditation to reputed institutions will be adapted to offer training and certification to CSI members who are geographically dispersed. As an example, the Information Security programme - PRISM offered by MIEL through reputed academic institutions is accredited by CSI.

5. International Competitions :

Every year CSI selects the best two teams of school students less than 17 years of age to represent India at the SEARCC (South East Asian Regional Computer Confederation) International Student Software Competition. CSI trains and funds the selected teams towards effective performance at the competition held in different countries on a rotational basis.

6. Funded Research (R & D funding for minor projects) :

CSI encourages research by faculty and students through the R & D funding initiative. Details are as below :

Computer Society of India provides financial assistance to permanent College Teachers (age below 45 years), for carrying out research in the fields of Computer Science/Information Technology. The faculty members should be members of CSI and work in an Institution which is an institutional Member of CSI. Students at post-graduate / under graduate levels are also encouraged to take up research in computer software / hardware under approved supervision. This research work is promoted and managed by the Education Directorate. Interested Researchers apply through the Head of the Institution once a year utilizing the application form available on the website. Education Directorate releases the call for sponsored research proposals during November – December. Proposals received within the specified deadline (January 31st) are scrutinized and selectively approved based on merit and funds availability. The duration for approved research programmes is 10 months from June to March of the next year. Complete details can be found at

7. Institutional and Student Branch Membership Services :

Education Directorate is the nodal agency for approval, issue of certificates, issue of ID cards and membership management for the following types of membership :
  • Academic Institution membership – new & renewal
  • Student Branch – new & renewal
  • Independent student membership – new & renewal

Student Portal Process

Three types of users are involved in this portal namely Students, Student Branch Coordinators (SBCs) and Mentors/Experts
The LOGINs for the SBCs are already created and will be sent to the mail-id of the SBC by the Education Directorate, Chennai.
The LOGINs for the CSI STUDENT VOLUNTEERS can be created on their own in "New Student Registration" menu
A student can Post Articles, Projects, Apps of the week, Tech Updates in this portal using MY UPDATES MENU after login
The content posted by students will be viewed by the SBC of the respective college who will need to approve or disapprove based on the merit of the content.
The content recommended by the SBC will be automatically forwarded to a panel of experts. The content if approved by a Mentor can be viewed by ALL.
A student can view the postings made by ALL other students which are approved by the SBC and Mentor using RECENT POSTS MENU

Code Of Ethics

All members are required to give an undertaking to the effect that they would abide by the CSI Code of Ethics. The Code of Ethics will also specify the procedure for the action to be taken against concerned members for any breach of this Code. Following is the Code of Ethics prepared by the ExecCom and adopted after approval by balloting by the Voting Members of CSI.

Code of ethics for CSI members (all categories)

A member of the Computer Society of India (CSI) shall :


Organise the resources available to him and optimise these in attaining the objectives of his organisation
Not misuse his authority or office for personal gains.
Comply with the Indian laws relating to the management of his organisation and operate within the spirit of these laws.
Conduct his affairs so as to uphold, project and further the image and reputation of the CSI.
Maintain integrity in research and publications.

As regards his ORGANISATION CSI member should :

Act with integrity in carrying out the lawful policy and instructions of his organisation and uphold its image and reputation. Plan, establish and review objectives and tasks for himself and his subordinates which are compatible with the Codes of practice of other professionals in the enterprise, and direct all available effort towards the success of the enterprise rather than of himself.

Fully respect the confidentiality of information which comes to him in the course of his duties, and not use confidential information for personal gain or in a manner which may be detrimental to this organisation or his clients.
Not snoop around in other people's computer files.
In his contacts and dealings with other people, demonstrate his personal integrity and humanity and when called to give an opinion in his professional capacity, shall, to the best of his ability, give an opinion that is objective and reliable.

As regards the EMPLOYEES, CSI member should :

Set an example to his subordinates through his own work and performance, through his leadership and by taking
Account of the needs and problems of his subordinates.
Develop people under him to become qualified for higher duties.
Pay proper regard to the safety and well being of the personnel for whom he is responsible.
Share his experience with fellow professionals.

As regards the CLIENTS, CSI member should :

Ensure that the terms of all contracts and terms of business be stated clearly and unambiguously.
Not use the computer to harm other people or to bear false witness.
Be objective and impartial when giving independent advice.

As regards the COMMUNITY, CSI member should :

Make the most effective use of all natural resources employed.
Be ready to give professional assistance in community affairs.
Not appropriate other people's intellectual output.
Always use a computer in ways that ensure consideration and respect for fellow humans.
Global Affiliations And CSI
Representing the Indian community in the International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP) since 1974.
Representation in all the technical Committees and some of the working groups of IFIP. CSI has also organised IFIP sponsored events and conferences in India.
Has reciprocal membership agreement with the British Computer Society and the Australian Computer Society and the IEEE Computer Society.
Membership Eligibility Criteria

Individual Membership

Those who are working in advancing the theory or application of Computer Science, Information Technology or other related disciplines. For admission to this grade the candidate should be Graduate of any discipline.


Educational Institutes Membership

The educational membership engaged in the academic areas of interest to CSI.
A nominated member of an institution shall cease to be a member of the CSI on severance of his employment with the Institution.
Minimum 3 nominees will be required for this membership.

All Other Institutes Membership

The institution membership of the CSI is limited to organizations engaged in use, sales, service, research, development and teaching in the areas of interest to CSI.
A nominated member of an institution shall cease to be a member of the CSI on severance of his employment with the Institution.
Minimum 3 nominees will be required for this membership.

Student Membership

The student can take the membership by fulfilling one of the below criteria.
1. Those who pass 10+2 academic program and are enrolled for a degree course either full time or part time at accredited educational institutions and carrying at least 30% of a normal full time academic program in areas of interest to CSI
2. Those who pass 10+2 academic program and are doing diploma courses approved by State Directorate of Technical Education, subject to their passing a module of the CSI examinations.
3. Those who pass 10+2 academic program and are doing a course in a non-formal institution, subject to their passing a module of the CSI examinations.
4. Those graduates doing a course in areas of interest common to the CSI
5. Those who are student members of any technical or scientific society with interest common to CSI

Subscribers

The Subscriber should be engaged in the areas of interest to CSI.
To register as a Subscriber there is no need to be a member of CSI.
