For technical activities the society is divided into 5 divisions as given below :
The Computer Society of India (CSI) has decided to adopt the mechanism of Special Interest Groups (SIGs) in order to take up research, promotion, and dissemination activities for selected domains, both established and emerging. While CSI has had thematic areas in the form of Divisions since its inception, the prevailing view was that these were too heavy weight to be responsive to the rapidly changing developments in different domains within the field of Information Technology. SIGs are intended to be lightweight structures that are constituted and dismantled on an as-needed basis, endowed with sufficient flexibility and functional autonomy to carry out its activities while being under accountable to the CSI Executive Committee. SIGs are organized on selected domains of significant academic, research, industry and societal importance.

e-Governance Award

Computer Society of India ( CSI ), has implemented the concept of "Special Interest Groups" to promote activities and research in dew focused areas. Special Interest Group on e-Governance ( SIGeGov) has been formed accordingly. The basic perceived objective has been to focus on an important area where Information Technology can be leveraged and bring like minded professionals together to add value by bringing out recommendations relevant to various stake holders.

India has already established itself as a leader in the Information Technology sector and create research echo system in the country in this area. Governments are under pressure to deliver a range of services in a timely, efficiently, economical, equitable, and transparent and corruption free manner to its citizens. E-Governance can have a profound impact on the poor and ultimately on the economic output and growth of the country as a whole. Information acts as a revolutionary force in bridging the digital divide. IT can vastly extend access to education, health care, financial services, vocational skills, administrative services and other aspects of the modern society, to many more people at far lower costs apart from generating employment. IT can dramatically reduce the cost of communications; improve access to technology and marketing capabilities for the rural poor. It can help in eliminating intermediary exploitation in the production and distribution chains, increasing government accountability.

The last decade has witnessed e-Governance penetrating India in both Urban and Rural areas, Central Government has announced a National e-Governance plan (NEGP) and each State has also defined their own e-Governance policies within the frame work of NEGP. The total investments being made to implement these initiatives are huge, and are impacting the domestic ICT market as well as education and training area significantly. IT spending in our country is being driven primarily by this initiative and impacting the lives of ordinary citizen across the country in a very positive fashion.

CSI is the only professional society covering individual user / Citizens as members and is most appropriately suited to focus and add significant value to the successful implementation of the e-Governance initiative in our country.

e-Governance has the capacity to take our country to the next generation and CSI-SIG-eGov plans to play a important role in that process.

SIGeGov Objectives

To create Computer Society of India (CSI) as a knowledge Base to facilitate, promote advice and support the e-Governance initiative in our country at State and Centre level.

The following activities are proposed:

Humane Computing is a matter of great importance, interest and concern and a significant area of research. The objective is to develop excellence in thought, research and action in the field of humane computing thereby enabling empowerment, environmental sustainability, inclusive growth, promotion of ethical values for improving human life. Great Thinkers and philosophers in the second half of Twentieth Century like Karl Popper and Fritzof Capra have propounded that every technology is a social engineering that has to stand the test of time in society. Technology as it is today and computing as a part of it, blunts our own human mental capacity. Ethics is lame without science, but science is blind without ethics.

We also need to see that computers do not make humans into robots and destroy their individuality and freshness and originality of thought. What we need to prevent is regimented research. In fact computers should be human friendly and human savvy, rather than people being forced to be computer savvy. Computing should be sensitive to needs of old, infirm, illiterate, non-urban, women, economically weaker sections and the like. Humane Computing is an attempt to promote ethics empowerment, empathy, equality, environmental sustainability thereby bridging the digital divide.

Since it involves coming together and study of humans as well as computers, it involves technical as well as soft subjects and diverse disciplines ranging from computing technology to soft disciplines like sociology, psychology, education, medicine, behavioral science and communication theory. A number of international and national events have focused on these issues across the world but primarily there is a need to focus specifically on the subject of humane computing.

There is an increasing need to crystallize the thought in India and take leadership and grow beyond the realms of human computing to humane computing. The SIG on Humane Computing of the Computer Society of India is primarily aimed at achieving this.

The focus areas covered by the SIG include :
Humane Computing
Empowerment, Ethics, Empathy in Computing
Computers in Medicine for Humane patient care and communications.
Privacy, Individuality, Independence & Computing
Computers in education and research.
Computers and their impact on Society and Culture
Computers and Women – Gender Issues in computing.
Environmental Sustainability in Computing.

The Security Special Interest Group - Information Security is a body of CSI focusing on security concerns of the users of the net, making the net a safer and a more reliable means of a) socializing with other people who share a common interest; b) conducting transactions on the net; c) conducting business efficiently with organizations and governments, d) sharing knowledge and e) accessing services offered by governments and other enterprises.

Our Vision

Educate to Enable Safety and Security in Cyber Space

CSI Special Interest Group - Information Security [SIG-IS] will be well positioned to bring together different groups of stakeholders in the area of Cyber Security. The SIG-IS will work towards being the pivotal group of professionals and experts in the area of Cyber Security, providing a platform for bringing together policy makers, private industry, end users and the academia. We will be a group called to provide expert opinion on matters of cyber security at the highest levels of government. The SIG-IS will also be the natural choice to spread education in cyber security at the grass roots level.

Raison de etre

Educate to Enable Safety and Security in Cyber Space

The world today is ever more connected and intelligent. It has become highly interactive. Societies are irrevocably dependent on the technologies of today. Opportunities abound in this new world. The flip side of this is the undesirable face of the unscrupulous lurking around taking undue advantage of unsuspecting users. The extent of this menace spans criminal activities for financial gain to threatening security of nations.

The endeavor to take advantage of the developments in technology is a constant journey; a race between the bona fide users and the unscrupulous elements. The fight against cyber crime involves users from all walks of life. It is important for everyone to be educated and be alert and watch out for the pitfalls. Today there is no single organization that brings all concerned parties together to face this threat Educating the public on simple measures to reduce the risk will be an on going task. The SIG-IS will be the pivotal organization that will bring together the policy makers on the one hand and the users on the other.

Various governmental bodies need professional input to deal with new issues that arise with rapidly changing technology. These could be formulating legislations to effectively tackle the menace or to formulate strategies to deal with the threat faced by the government in protecting information, citizen safety and confidence.

Most often academic research ends up in some remote shelf in libraries of places of learning. CSI SIG-IS will facilitate convergence of the interests of these groups and help bring the benefits to the end users.

There is a compendium of knowledge and collection of experience residing in private industry. The SIG-IS will also work to bring together private industry, the academia and the government along with the users of the net.

In today's fast moving competitive business environment, companies increasingly demand that IT investments demonstrate business value through measurable results.

For most leaders, this will involve three steps: reassessing their information technology plan and approaches; investing carefully to support their IT plan; and mastering the capabilities needed to realize that plan. This is also true for even the outsourcing industry where the customers are increasing demanding the delivery of Business Value by vendors, instead of only quality products. We at Computer Society of India have this unique opportunity of building the knowledge base and disseminating information around ‘Business Value of IT'.

Formal Methods (FM) has been in existence since 1940’s, when Alan Turing proved the logical analysis of sequential programs using the properties of program states; and Floyd, Hoare and Naur used axiomatic techniques to prove program correctness against the specifications in 1960’s.

These initial successes helped inculcate an interest in applying FM to the field of computer science.

Academia has been instrumental in bringing this field to the forefront, through continued research and development. The use of Formal Methods requires an expert skill-set expertise and therefore, its use is limited to those trained in the field.
